Landscape Photographer of the Year

"The weather forecast the previous night had looked promising, so the following morning an early start was necessary to get to this location before it started to get light. Over the next hour the conditions were perfect. A thin mist floated over the surface of the loch as the distant clouds were flushed with the colours of twilight as the sun began to rise. As usual when visiting waterside locations with a view to taking some photographs, I was wearing my Wellington boots. This allows more compositional options. Here, I waded out a few metres into the loch so I could get a composition without any distracting foreground rocks or vegetation. Each time I moved my feet I had to wait about a minute for the ripples I created to abate before taking the next shot."

This photograph was one of the commended entries in the 'Classic View' category of the 'Take a View' Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. It was awarded a place in the awards book (available from AA Publishing) and appeared as an exhibition print at London's National Theatre. Packhorse Track, King Street, and Path to Pen y Fan are commended entries from other years of the same competition.
