"This photograph shows the most well known view of the village of Staithes. As I was staying for a week in a cottage only 20 metres from this spot I had a good opportunity to capture some shots in different conditions. Visiting during the autumn equinox, I knew the twilight before sunrise would be a good time, looking due east into the area of the rising sun. This shot was taken about half an hour before sunrise, the dark conditions allowing some long exposures which resulted in the clouds tracing some pleasing trails in the sky overhead. Even half an hour before sunrise it was difficult to balance the contrast between the bright sky and the dark village using a combination of hard and soft neutral density graduated filters."
